7 Yobe LGAs at Risk of Severe Flooding – Fanfair Forecast predicts

Seven local government areas (LGAs) in Yobe state are bracing for severe flooding in the next 10 days, according to a forecast by Fanfair, a European Union-funded project on flood management in West Africa.

The LGAs that are at risk are Yusufari, Yunusari, Bursari, Geidam, Karasuwa, Nguru, and Bade. Fanfair’s forecast indicates that Nuguru axis is at the highest risk of flooding, with a severity level of 3. Other areas are at severity levels 2 and 1, which exceed the normal threshold.

Another forecast by Glofas, an international flood forecasting system, also indicates a rising risk of flooding in the LGAs. Glofas’ forecast predicts a 70-80% chance of extreme rainfall exceeding 50mm across Yobe and Adamawa states.

The combined effect of extreme rainfall and rising water levels is expected to increase the chances of flooding in the next 10 days.

The Yobe state government is taking steps to mitigate the risk of flooding. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is working with local authorities in the risk areas to monitor the situation and prepare for flooding. SEMA is also advising residents to be aware of the risks and to take precautions.

Residents of the affected LGAs are being urged to:

  • Stay informed about the latest flood warnings and advisories.
  • Move to higher ground if flooding occurs.
  • Avoid driving through flooded areas.
  • Be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

The state government is also working with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to provide assistance to farmers and other affected residents. FAO is providing seeds, fertilizer, and other agricultural inputs to help farmers recover from the flooding.

The government is also working to improve drainage systems in the affected areas to reduce the risk of future flooding.
