Labour Party denies merger with PDP, NNPP

The Labour Party (LP) has denied that it is planning to merge with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, said that the LP is not considering merging with any party at this time. He said that the party is focused on its legal challenge to the results of the 2023 presidential election.

The LP’s media aide, Tai Obasi, also denied the reports of a merger. He said that the LP respects the political ideologies of the PDP and the NNPP, but that it is not yet time to talk about a merger.

Both Farouk and Obasi said that the LP is open to the possibility of an alliance with other parties, but that a merger is not currently on the table.

The reports of a possible merger between the LP, the PDP, and the NNPP came after the three parties met in Abuja last week. The meeting was reportedly to discuss the possibility of forming a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.

However, the LP has made it clear that it is not yet ready to merge with any party. The party is focused on its legal challenge to the results of the election, and it is not yet clear what the outcome of that challenge will be.

If the LP is successful in its legal challenge, it could emerge as a major player in the 2023 general elections. In that case, it may be more willing to consider a merger with other parties. However, for now, the LP is keeping its options open.
