Picking a Vice President in 1999 was a mistake – Obasanjo 

Olusegun Obasanjo, Former president has said that picking a running mate in the 1999 presidential election was a mistake.

The former president made this statement on Saturday, June 25, while he was speaking in Abeokuta at a leadership and entrepreneurship mentoring session with selected school students.

Olusegun Obasanjo, who won the 1999 and 2003 presidential elections, ran alongside Atiku Abubakar, who is currently the Presidnetial flagbearer of PDP in the 2023 presidential election. During his administration, both fell apart. 

While Speaking at the leadership programme, Obasanjo said

“I don’t say I don’t make mistakes – I made many of them. But one thing that has happened to me is that God has never disappointed me. And that is very important. For instance, one of the mistakes I made was picking a number two when I was going to become President. But because it is a genuine mistake, God saved me out of it.”

Recall that the presidential primary election of the nation’s main opposition party ended on Saturday night in favour of Atiku.

The Adamawa State-born politician emerged the winner of the polls after polling the highest votes.

The former Vice President clinched the much coveted ticket during the presidential primary of the main opposition party held on Saturday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Atiku who polled a total of 371 votes ahead of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, will now be the official candidate of the PDP for the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

Details of the votes scored by the aspirants are as follows:

Atiku Abubakar – 371

Nyesom Wike- 237

Bukola Saraki – 70

Udom Emmanuel – 38

Bala Mohammed – 20

Pius Anyim – 14

Sam Ohabunwa – 1

Olivia Tariela – 1

There were 12 void votes

Nigerians on social media have, however, reacted to Atiku’s victory as they expressed their different views.

“PDP produced Atiku. Delegates can give him the ticket. But will his own kinsmen who are currently suffering under a fulani leadership elect another fulani man as president? He might end up a miscalculation on the part of Pdp.

On his part, PhilCollins_LFC [@PhilColins_O] said: “The North will almost always outsmart Southern Nigeria on election matters. Imagine Tambuwal waiting until the last minute to step aside for Atiku. Wike was busy attacking Peter Obi. APC is likely to go the same way except they learn from this. Meanwhile, #PeterObi to the rescue.”
