Golden Eaglets captain, Samson Tijani, has apologized to Nigerians following a disappointing defeat to Netherlands which saw the team crash out of the ongoing FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil.
Eaglets failed to replicate their historical dominance in the South American country on Wednesday night, November 5, after suffering a 3-1 defeat courtesy of a Sontje Hansen’s hat-trick for the Dutch team.
Speaking with Lagos-based radio station Brila FM, Tijani apologized for the team’s lackluster performance, stressing that Eaglets were overpowered by the better side.
“We are very sorry; we as a team to the entire Nigerians. We tried our best but the result was down to hard-luck coupled with the fact that our opponents are a very good side,” Tijani said
“Our team had to succumb to the pressure from our opponent, we tried to calm the pressure and we were able to achieve that until the dying minutes where VAR had to suppress us with that penalty.
“That alone weakened our morale and it is already late for a comeback at that minute,” the Golden Eaglets leader said.
Tijani scored two goals for the Golden Eaglets before they were ingloriously shown the exit door out of the tournament.
